“Damn! Damn! Damn! Of all the times for Lyle to pick to want to ‘bond’ — that asshole…”

Miss Parker’s footsteps beat a staccato tattoo on the cement as she ran to her black Boxster, unlocking the door as she came nearer. Yanking the driver’s door open with enough force that a more fragile car would have lost its door entirely, she threw her purse onto the passenger seat and then inserted herself behind the wheel. Lyle’s unpredictability had come perilously close to making her late — and this was one appointment she DIDN’T want to miss.

The powerful engine roared to life at her command, and the wheels squealed on the pavement as she backed out of her official parking spot and peeled rubber toward the exit of the structure. Still aware of her surroundings despite her rush, she laid a heavy hand on her horn when another driver wanted to slip ahead of her just before the exit, and she shot the driver a predatory grin as she sped past him.

Once onto the city streets, she pushed the sedan as fast as she dared over the country lane that took her from the Centre Tower into the sleepy little seaside village of Blue Cove. Not wanting the slow down at all, she sped through stop sign after stop sign when no oncoming traffic was visible. She missed seeing the little sports car coming at her from behind a parked van at an equally high rate of speed, however, and she pushed the pedal to the floorboards to speed through the next intersection — at which she had the right of way — to avoid being hit.

Tires squealed as she rounded another corner and sped toward the school and then swerved to avoid a less-than-alert crossing guard stepping off a curb in front of her at the head of a clump of six children that looked as if they belonged in a kindergarten class. “Idiot,” she hissed. “Pay attention!”

Almost there! She pulled the car to a seatbelt-testing, screeching halt in front of the school and waited patiently until… there! She put her hand out and waved at Deb Broots, and the girl waved back and trotted over to the car.

“Did you really mean it, Miss Parker?” Debbie bubbled in excitement. “Do we really get to go shopping again this afternoon?”

“A promise is a promise,” she smiled at the girl. “And just wait until we show your Dad your new outfit THIS time! I can’t wait to see the expression on his face…” Debbie giggled conspiratorially, and Miss Parker pointed. “Buckle up, kid. We’re going for a ride!”

“All right!”

The powerful engine roared to life again, and the car moved a little more sedately this time through the narrow Blue Cove streets on its way back to the highway to Dover and the boutiques to be found there.
